Within Howdens Joinery, the 'Respect for all' programme launched in 2004 has enabled the company to gain a good understanding of it's people as individuals and to implement effective ways to attract and develop great employees. Training and development is critical to this, by providing employees with plenty of opportunities to enhance their skills, knowledge and experience. In 2008 Howdens Joinery investied in over 36,000 hours of training and development for its employees.

During 2008, depots made more than 1,300 donations to local good causes, with some £370,000 in cash and products given. This included donations to local schools, village halls, care homes, local youth groups and sports clubs, or cash donations to purchase equipment and employee fundraising initiatives.
