Over the summer, Caroline at the Barrow-in-Furness depot has been busy designing one of the largest projects we’ve done for Leonard Cheshire Disability...
YouthAbility is Leonard Cheshire’s youth programme in Cumbria, which supports young people with all types of disability to socialise and learn new skills to further their independence.
Leonard Cheshire recently acquired a new property for the youth club on Walney Island, which needed to be renovated before it could be used. In true community spirit, Howdens in Barrow, local joiner Baz and volunteers from across the town came together to make it a space where young disabled people can go to feel safe, make friends and learn new skills.
On 22nd September, YouthAbility held a Brazilian themed carnival to celebrate the first phase of the renovation, with the Major of Barrow opening their first inclusive kitchen. The YouthAbility family is over the moon with their new kitchen, and can’t wait for the next part of the project which will see a kitchen workshop developed to run cooking lessons, an arts room, sensory room, games room and outdoor area for young disabled people from across Barrow to enjoy.
