In August 2004, our charities manager Bill, started looking for a charity that Howdens could support...
We also wanted to find a charity that shared our values, of looking out for others, and creating value and opportunities for everyone within a local community. Leonard Cheshire Disability was a perfect fit and we decided to support the charity not just through financial donations, but also with our knowledge and expertise in kitchens.
Almost 13 years later, Howdens have donated nearly 100 inclusive kitchens, become the primary funder of the ‘Can Do’ project, and cumulatively raised £3.2million. None of this would have been possible without Bill, who has overseen the partnership through the years. He took it upon himself to visit dozens of services, personally supervising and advising on the kitchen designs; he has organised Howdens’ ever-growing support for the 'Can Do' project; and has led his colleagues' fundraising efforts.
Bill’s contribution to the partnership cannot be understated. This was reflected by his nomination by Leonard Cheshire Disability for the Corporate and Public Sector Charity Champion at the Charity Staff Foundation Awards, which he was very honoured to win in March 2014. Everyone is sad to see Bill retire but we are very grateful for his dedication and sincerity, which has helped transform the lives of thousands of people with disabilities.
