External doors construction

Your choice of door says a lot about your personality and individual style. Just as important is to be sure that the door you are installing is fit for purpose.

Howdens Joinery stocks a large range of external doors. Offering you choices of hardwood, softwood, French doors and flush doors from stock. The construction of each type differs making it very important you are using the correct door. All the doors can be decorated using various stain or paint finishes and many are also supplied pre-glazed.

Hardwood doors

Hardwood doors

All of our external hardwood doors are of an engineered constuction, with a hardwood veneer to increase stability.

These doors are constructed using either varients of mortice and tenon joints, dowell joints or slab construction.

Our oak doors consist of an engineered core and real oal veneer.

We offer oak and hardwood doors with double and triple glazing. There is a decorative centre layer in the triple glazed panels (which can be clear, obscure or bevelled and with zinc leading) this is protected by two outer layers of 4mm toughened glass. This sealed with waterproof unit increases the thermal performance of the window and makes it easy to clean.

Finishing information
Our hardwood doors are ready for finishing with varnish or stain. Waxes, polishes and oils should not be used as the may cause delamination.

Part L external doors

Part L external doors

Part L doors are constructed with an internal insulation panel to provide improved thermal efficiency. When fitted with an approved frame, our Part L doors achieve a 'U' value of 1.8W/m2K or better.

Softwood doors

Softwood doors

These products are suitable for a range of applications. They are supplied ready for finishing on site and to your particular specification.

FL&B and L&B doors have loose pinned ledges and braces which can be moved and pinned to the opposite side of the door. This gives flexibility when choosing which way round the door is hung.

Flush doors

Flush doors

You can choose from solid doors and versions with glazed window apertures, and we offer FD30 and FD60 models.

The external solid core blank lightweight door is constructed using three layers of laminate core. This means it can be cut to suit different shape openings, cut to size, apertures can be made in accordance with guidelines, and veneers or other finishes can be added.

Double & French doors

Double & French doors

Many situations can benefit from double or French doors, and Howdens offer a good choice of styles. Softwood doors are available with a solid timber stud mortice and tenon or dowel construction.Bottom panels in the softwood are engineered construction. Hardwood doors are also available within this range with an engineered mortice and tenon construction.

All double and French doors are rebated for right hand opening.

All our softwood double and French doors are suitable for a paint finish only. Hardwood double and French doors are suitable for finishing with varnish, paint or stain.

Garage doors

Our redwood garage doors are made from Group 1 European timber, and are rebated for right hand opening as the illustration shows.
