Here at Howdens, our approach to charities is aligned to how we do business: locally empowered but on a national scale. We believe in looking after people and giving back to the communities in which we work. We fulfil this as a company by offering our products, time, and money to good causes, and we pass this ethos onto our staff. Celebrating 17 years with Leonard Cheshire

Independent living is at the heart of our enduring partnership with Leonard Cheshire, which is why five inclusive kitchens were fitted in Leonard Cheshire care homes across the UK in 2020. In 2021, we would like to fit more, while continuing to support their "Can Do" initiative, which provides young adults with valuable work experience in the community.

Going out on the road with I Can & I Am

I Can & I Am is a charity whose purpose is to inspire confidence, visiting hundreds of schools and businesses to inflate self-belief among adults and young people. This year, I Can & I Am will take their positive attitude on the road, thanks to a new double-decker bus kitted out by us. With new wheels, they will provide mentoring and skilled workshops around the UK.
The lower level of the bus features a Howdens kitchen used for groups to learn new skills, whilst the upper level provides a space for mentoring.

Aiming high for Sheffield kids

When Area Manager Ed Gregory’s daughter was successfully treated at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, it sparked an idea - an ambitious goal to raise £100k for the hospital over a ten-year period. So far, Ed has generated £27,000 by taking part in various challenges, including the Three Peaks Challenge and Million Metre Row. Of the two, Ed says the Three Peaks was the hardest to complete, taking him more than 27 hours to climb the mountains.

Helping out with handball

Nick Davey, from our Glastonbury depot, was excited when his son’s handball team was chosen to represent England in the esteemed Caban Cup. With the competition being held in Poland and new shirts needed, the Year 11 team needed help getting there and looking the part. Nick arranged sponsored shirts for the boys, and raised £4,000 to get them to the event. Once there, the boys competed against Poland’s most skilful teams, and can in eighth out of 15.
