Richard Channer, a customer at the Howdens' Mansfield depot, has twice visited Kenya to help the Nasio Trust...
The charity runs two day-care centres, providing pre-school lessons, food and medical aid to children and young people. Richard's life-long dream was to go to Africa and build homes, and his opportunity came when a photographer friend told him she'd been invited to take some pictures for the Nasio Trust, and they also needed help with maintenance and construction work.
Richard jumped at the chance, taking four friends with him - an electrician, a plumber, a joiner and a tiler - along with tools donated by Howdens. On his first trip, Richard helped convert existing dwellings into a modern orphanage, and on his second he worked on an extension, including a kitchen, to house pre-school children.
He's already planning a third trip for November 2013. Here we can see Richard holding a photo taken with Kenyan tiler Jon Marshall and 'Samson' the chicken, a gift from Jon in return for the tape measure, panel saw and gloves Richard gave him.
