This is our second kitchen with howdens and can't fault Tom .Not really knowing what we want and making it up as we go along Tom has allways been patient and helpful in guiding us in the right direction at an affordable price. Very impressed with the quality and delivery service.

Kitchen fitting
Got our kitchen done a few months ago using the Penrith branch. We loved everything about it the design process was so much fun and Paige met our every need as well as giving us tips to save money or make our lives easier. Then set us up with a trusted joiner to fit the kitchen and he did an amazing job. Very fair price with the option to change details if the price was too much. Really great experience and love how the kitchen turned out. Highly recommend

superb service beautiful kitchen
The service we received from Paige at Penrith was outstanding. Paige was so knowledgeable, had great patience and understanding, nothing was too much trouble. We now have a beautiful kitchen. The Penrith showroom is superbly fitted out with many designs. Every member of the team made our visit a pleasure. We were even offered a coffee.

VERY shady
One of the joiners who worked on my year long renovation project recommended Howdens to me and said 'mention my name'. So I did and Howdens sent a quote to me with the joiners name on the account. I went to their kitchen showroom in Penrith to alter the design, choose doors and haggle the price. At this point Tom, the salesman, said I would be paying them direct. "So I can deal with Howdens directly?" I asked. 'Yes' was the simple reply. (Foolish boy - I had an independent witness with me). From that point on everything was direct, including the payment request. Unusually for me I didn't insist on an invoice - busy, distracted. Howdens then sent the joiner the VAT invoice even though he had not paid, he was not the customer. I now cannot reclaim the VAT or set against capital gains tax so it's costing me over £1,800 more on top of a £4,300 kitchen. I have absolutely no doubts about this particular, aforementioned, joiner's honesty, he is too serious and professional a man to be so dishonest. Quite apart from the fat that he is not VAT registered so couldn't reclaim the VAT anyway. However any dishonest tradesman can of course can set these 'customer pays - tradesman receipted' invoices against profits on his turnover and - this is clever - can stay below the VAT threshold by having the customer pay his bills for him (even though it was nothing to do with him and he may have made a profit). HMRC and the VAT office are very interested and sadly it looks as though literally thousands of honest fitters, joiners etc will be investigated for a potential national multi million VAT and tax fraud along with the less honest. And that's quite apart from leaving the customer with no proof of purchase. Read some of the 1 star reviews on here from people who have been left with faulty kitchens who are denied their guarantee by Howdens when they can't trace the original fitter. Howdens, who are enabling and possibly abetting this huge tax loophole, are disinterested but I suspect they will just have to get interested. Follow up 9th Feb: Howdens have spoken to the joiner in question today and clearly insinuated to him that my complaint is against the him, upsetting him a great deal. It is certainly not. The joiner was an absolute star. My complaint is against Howdens alone and their underhand misdirection tactics are exactly what I have come to expect from this faceless multinational company who purport to be a family firm (did you know they used to have MFI in their portfolio - till it went bust?)
